Gum Disease and Cardiovascular Health
What is Gum Disease?
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory process that is initiated mainly by a plaque and bacteria mix. The body tries to defend against any pathogens and their byproducts by initiating an inflammatory response. During this process of inflammation the body produces inflammatory mediators; as well, the pathogens (bacteria) produce their own byproducts, both which damage healthy connective and bone tissues around the teeth.
What Is The Suggested Link Between Gum Disease and Cardiovascular Disease?
Researchers have continued to find increasing evidence that demonstrates the link between low grade inflammation as a trigger to cardiovascular disease. Many studies are still underway to determine the degree to which periodontal disease plays a role in the process. The inflammation that occurs in gum disease has a system wide effect (a whole body response). Overtime, this low grade inflammation produces mediators which affects the cardiovascular structures and can lead to coronary disease.
