Trigeminal Neuralgia, That is a mouthful, What is that?
What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Is a sensory disorder that effects the fifth cranial nerve (The Trigeminal Nerve). This disorder is most commonly observed in middle aged to older individuals. The main characteristics of the condition is characterized by random attacks of very high pain, almost like an electric shock. In some cases the pain can be so intense it causes the individual to tighten or flinch the side of the face of the nerve distribution. The triggers for the pain can be anything from air blowing on the face, to brushing the teeth, chewing or drinking.
What causes Trigeminal Neuralgia?
The cause of trigeminal neuralgia is unknown; however, the leading thought cause to the condition is compression of the nerve by a blood vessel(s). Other considerations, is that the neurons within the nerve are being affected by and underlying pathology.
What is the Treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Trigeminal Neuralgia, is a very rare condition and often before a diagnosis can be made or considered all other causes of the pain must be investigated; a thorough check-up can determine if they are other underlying causes which may be contributing to associated pain. If all other causes of the underlying pain have being considered and the pain persist; treatment can range from medications to surgical intervention.
