Dental Emergency Enamel Dentin Pulp Fracture
A complicated fracture; a dental emergency, best describe the Enamel-Dentin-Pulp Fracture, which is a form of dental trauma. This type of dental trauma can be sustained for a blow or knock on a tooth. This form of trauma involves the enamel (outer part of the tooth), the dentin (the middle layer) as well a the pulp (blood vessels & nerves).

Treatment for a Enamel Dentin Pulp Fracture
- In young patients and when the teeth or still growing (open apex), very effort is made to preserve the pulp vitality. This can be done in two ways either by direct pulp capping or by a partial pulpotomy (removing some of the pulp tissue) to allow for further root development. This is also the treatment option for individuals with a closed apex or a tooth that has completed its formation. The treatment materials of choice are either calcium hydroxide or mineral trioxide aggregate (white). There is still a chance if the nerve does not survive that in the future the tooth many need root canal therapy or to be extracted.
- In older patients when there is also a luxation injury (displacement of the tooth), the likelihood of root canal therapy is very high.
Important Patient Instructions
- A soft diet for one week is recommended
- Maintaining good oral hygiene is important for the health of the teeth and oral tissues. Further it is recommended to rinse with either a salty rinse or an antibacterial rinse (chlorhexidine) for twice daily for two weeks.
Dental Review
- Clinical and radiographic control at 6-7 weeks and 1 year.
